The 25th Annual Glen Cove St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on Sunday, March 17, 2013.

St.. Patrick’s Day in Glen Cove this year will be even more special than usual for two great reasons.  The first is that Glen Cove gets a rare chance to hold its St. Patrick’s Day Parade on St. Patrick’s Day itself, since the Manhattan parade is held on Saturday when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday.  The second is that this year’s Parade will be the 25th Annual parade since its inception in 1989.  During that time the Parade, always a dazzling event, has grown to be the premier St. Patrick’s Day celebration on the North Shore and the largest annual parade in Glen Cove.

This year’s Grand Marshal is renowned Irish activist and Sea Cliff resident Daniel J. Lane.  He will be accompanied by Aides Robert and Pamela Panzenbeck, Lisa Forgione and Joseph McDonald.

The Parade begins to form up at 12 noon in the area of the Finley Middle School on Forest Avenue.  It steps off at 1pm, following the usual route through downtown Glen Cove to St. Patrick’s Church.  There is very ample parking in the municipal garages and at the end of the parade route.  Click here for more information on the parade route and directions.

The backbone of the parade, as always, will be its exciting mix of marching groups, including many bands of Irish pipers.  Further color will be added to the festivities by vintage cars, costumed performers, face painters, fire and police units and much more.  The parade is a true community celebration of the coming of Spring with many of our areas ethnic organizations, often in costume, taking part.  Come, join the fun!

Glen Cove, NY (January 25, 2012) – The Glen Cove St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has named Glen Cove Deputy Mayor Maureen Basdavanos Grand Marshal of the 24th annual Glen Cove St. Patrick’s Day Parade with Sioban Rack and John J. Hanley Aides.

The Parade will take place on Sunday March 18, 2012 using the same route, starting at the Finley Middle School on Forrest Avenue and weaving through the streets of the city, ending at St. Patrick’s Church.

Maureen Basdavanos is a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and also the daughter of AOH Division 8’s namesake Mike Moran.

“It is such an honor to be asked to lead this year’s parade as the Grand Marshall,” Basdavanos said. “There is no better St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Long Island thanks to the AOH Mike Moran Division 8.  I only wish my dad were here to march beside me.”

Maureen Basdavanos (nee Moran) is the Deputy Mayor of Glen Cove, appointed in 2008 by Mayor Ralph Suozzi. She is a member of the Board of Directors for Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S. and a Board member for the Glen Cove Business Improvement District (BID), the Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Sounds Committee, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission and is a long-time supporter of the Glen Cove Animal Lover’s League.  Basdavanos was an active member of the Glen Cove High School Booster Club volunteering with her husband Bill to photograph and report weekly on all JV and Varsity sports.  She was also a long-time volunteer Cheerleading Coach for Glen Cove Jr. Football and Cheerleading and a Cub Scout leader. She is married to former Glen Cove fire chief Bill Basdavanos and has two grown children.

Sioban Rack (nee Lane) is Associate Director of Special Events of SCO Family or Services and the immediate past president of St. Dymphna Division 8 of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. With corporate contacts, volunteers and donors she has provided Christmas for hundreds of children and adolescents every year, arranged trips and special outings, and recently, working with the Garden of Dreams foundation, she has even enabled some of our children to perform at Radio City Music Hall. She is married to Jim Rack and has a 16 year-old son James.

An active attorney in the community, John Hanley ran for Glen Cove City Council a number of time, most recently last year. He is also the immediate past president of Mike Moran Division 8 of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and also served as Vice President and Marshal. He currently serves on the Glen Cove High School Community Scholarship Committee and is Past President of the Catholic Accountant’s Guild of Rockville Centre. He is married to the former Teresa Esposito and has three daughters.

Maureen is the oldest daughter of Michael and Mary Moran.  She served as Deputy Mayor for the City of Glen Cove from 2008 through 2013, appointed by Mayor Ralph V. Suozzi.

Maureen was born and raised in Sea Cliff, NY.  She received her education at St. Boniface Martyr School, North Shore High School and The Katherine Gibbs School.  She became a member of the Ladies AOH in 2010.  It seemed like a natural progression since the AOH has been a major part of her life since she was a child.  She is a member of St. Patrick’s Parish, but also keeps her childhood parish of St. Boniface Martyr close at heart.

Sioban is the third child to Daniel and (the late) Sally Lane.  Her dad is from County Cork, Ireland and her mom was from County Tyrone, Ireland.  She was raised to enjoy Irish step dancing, music, laughter and the sounds of the bagpipes.  Sioban was born in Roslyn, NY and raised in Sea Cliff with her three siblings, Dennis, Patricia and Daniel Joseph, where she attended St. Boniface Martyr School, North Shore High School and ITT Business School.  She has been an employee of SCO Family of Services for Thirty-three years.

In all her roles over the last 33 years, one thing has remained constant; year after year Sioban has brought happiness to thousands of children across the agency.  With corporate contacts, volunteers and donors she has provided Christmas for hundreds of children and adolescents every year, arranged trips and special outings, and recently, working with the Garden of Dreams foundation, she has even enabled some of our children to perform at Radio City Music Hall.

In addition to all of this Sioban has worked with volunteers, putting together highly successful events that have raised funds to support programs across the agency.  Her success in this area is a direct result of the passion she has for the children and families she services.

She has been a member of the LAOH since 2006 serving as Vice President and President.  She has been involved with the St. Patrick’s Day dance, Garage Sales and all LAOH fund raising activities.  She is also a member of the St. Boniface Martyr Ministries.

Sioban is married to the love of her life Jim Rack and they are enjoying raising their son – James Rack who is 16 years old and a junior at North Shore High School.

John J. Hanley was born on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on August 15, 1965 in Franklin Square on Long Island. He was the only child of John Hanley and Catherine McDermott, both of whom trace their family trees to Roscommon. He attended grammar school and High School in Franklin Square at Willow Road and St. Catherine of Sienna elementary schools and Valley Stream North High School. He attended St. John’s University in Jamaica, New York where he majored in Accounting. His greatest memory of attending St. John’s was having the opportunity to attend an on-campus speech by President Ronald Reagan on March 28, 1985. Of note, is that John had actually won a drawing to attend St. John’s final four appearance in Lexington, Kentucky on the same day and decided to see The President’s speech instead.

He graduated St. John’s in 1987 and began an accounting career which landed him as an Internal Auditor for MetLife and received his designation as a Certified Public Accountant in 1993.

In 1991, at a High School friend’s wedding, he met Teresa Esposito. John and Teresa were married in 1993. They moved to Park Slope, Brooklyn where Teresa was completing her internship as a physician. When Teresa accepted an invitation to complete her residency at Glen Cove Hospital, they moved to an apartment in Glen Head, New York where they remained until the 1998 birth of their first daughter, Isabella. They then moved north to Glen Cove. Lara, their second daughter, was born in 2000 followed by their third, Victoria, in 2004.

While working for MetLife in New Jersey, Mr. Hanley attended Touro Law School at night. He graduated law school in 1997 and was admitted to the bar in the Spring of 1998.

In 2005, John was invited to join the team seeking election to the City Council of Glen Cove. While unsuccessful, his Irish stubroness led him to attempt two more times, the latest being in 2011.

Since becoming a member of Division 8 of the A.O.H. in 2005, Mr. Hanley has served as the President, Vice-President and Marshall, the latter being his current position with The Division. He currently serves on the Glen Cove High School Community Scholarship Committee and is Past President of the Catholic Accountant’s Guild of Rockville Centre.

John would like to thank the Glen Cove St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee for inviting him to be an Aide to the Grand Marshall in the 2012 Glen Cove Parade and for the honor of marching next to fellow Aide to the Grand Marshall, Sioban Rack and Grand Marshall Maureen Basdavanos. John would also like to express the deepest love and gratitude to Teresa, Isabella, Lara and Victoria for their constant support, encouragement and sacrifice which allow him to fulfill his duties with the A.O.H.

 

2011 Parade A Grand Success

The 2011 Glen Cove St. Patrick’s Day Parade had beautiful weather as the marchers went down Glen Street. The sidewalks were filled four to five deep in Downtown Glen Cove, cheering on Grand Marshal Andy Stafford and his Aides Jim Burke and Carol McTigue.

“I am so honored this day,” said Stafford. “I couldn’t imagine it any better.”

Three different counties and six different AOH divisions were represented, while the Nassau County Ladies were also out in full force.

After the parade Division 8 sponsored an after-party at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall where Mayor Ralph Suozzi presented awards to the Grand Marshal and Aides.

 

2011 Aide To The Grand Marshal Carol McTigue

Carol was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, the eldest of three children born to Anna and Perry Brink.  Active in her parish of Our Lady Help of Christians, she was a member of the CCD Journalism and Drama Clubs.  While in high school Carol met her future husband Ted Mc Tigue and soon after graduation, they were married.  The following adventureous years were busy raising their six sons in Lynbrook as well as being foster parents for the Angel Guardian Home.  Having all the boys, Carol became active with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Den Mother for a number of years and also as a Merit Badge Counselor.  She received many commendations from the Boy Scouts among them the “Silver Beaver Award” and the “St. George Award” from the Bishop’s Committee on Scouting.

After her years of Scouting and still with her CCD participation, Carol began working at the J.C. Penney Company.  She left Penney’s to begin a new career in Banking at Jamaica Savings Bank in Lynbrook.

Retirement came after twenty one years at the Bank with her title of Student Loan Officer.  Still active at her parish of Our Lady of Peace, Carol is a Eurachistic Minister and is a member of the RCIA Team for a number of years.

A proud member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Carol has been active for approximately 20 years, and has held office for her Division 14, Her County of Nassau, and her State of New York.  At present, she is the LAOH New York State Secretary, The Nassau County Feis Secretary, and Vice President of her Division 14.  Her Division has honored Carol with the “Woman of the Year” and Nassau County has also honored her with the “Woman of the Year”.  Marching in the many St. Patrick’s Day Parades, the Celebrations of the Feast of St. Brigid as well as the Annual Nassau County Feis,  have certainly been the highlights of  her Hibernian years.

Carol and Ted will be celebrating 53 years of marriage this September along with their family of 6 Sons, two Granddaughters, and one Great Granddaughter.
